for Hopeville Pond, Mashamoquet Brook, Quaddick, and Sleeping Giant State Parks; and Pachaug and\u00a0 Shenipsit State Forests.\u00a0 In 1996, Stratton Brook State Park in Simsbury was the first to Park Trail is a\u00a054.6 mile linear rail\/ trail passing through eleven towns in eastern Connecticut.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From the site: &#8220;Stretching across eastern Connecticut from Thompson to East Hampton, this linear trail dates from the 1870s, and today draws walkers, hikers, horseback riders and bikers from across the state for the views, the Park, at Groton, was part of a \u00a0parcel granted to John Winthrop, Jr., Connecticut&#8217;s first governor, in\u00a01649.\u00a0 \u00a0It was farmed until the 1950\u2019s.\u00a0 A park for approx. 47 years, this historic land turned dairy farm is now a 276 acre nature escape.\u00a0 There is a\u00a0wide range of habitat from upland forest to marshy wetlands, which makes for good birding and for roadways.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><li class=\"listing-item\"><div class=\"content\"><p><strong>Hammonasset Beach State Park<\/strong><br \/>\nHammonasset Beach State Park, near Madison, lies adjacent to the Hammonasset Natural Area Preserve and offers over two miles of shoreline,\u00a0 a boardwalk, picnic tables and shelters, showers, a nature center, surf chairs, and a campground.\u00a0 number 203-245-8743) before going.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><li class=\"listing-item\"><div class=\"content\"><p><strong>Kent Falls State Park<br \/>\n<\/strong>At Kent Falls State Park in the Litchfield Hills Region of CT,\u00a0 Falls Brook drops in a series of waterfalls 250&#8242; to the Housatonic River.\u00a0 There is a covered bridge and a short paved walk to the base of the falls.\u00a0 The walk to the top has hand rails, but is described by some as steep.\u00a0 There are only 10 available parking spaces, including some accessible.\u00a0 The bathrooms are accessible.\u00a0 Here is a class=\"listing-item\"><div class=\"content\"><p><strong>Machimoodus State Park<br \/>\n<\/strong>The 300 acres of Machimoodus State Park, East Haddum, overlook the Salmon River and Salmon River Cove and incorporate uplands, woodlands, meadows, river and cove waterfronts.\u00a0 Three ponds near the park entrance abut fields which are mowed for the benefit of the summer wildflowers.\u00a0\u00a0The \/><\/a>Tree ID Trail 0.4 mile featuring 20 native trees and shrubs<\/p>\n<p>These trails are gravel and according to DEEP&#8217;s ADA coordinator,\u00a0 probably challenging for wheelchairs.\u00a0 However, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ct.gov\/deep\/lib\/deep\/wildlife\/pdf_files\/maps\/maps_hunting_area\/map446.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hunting Map<\/a>\u00a0shows a &#8220;handicap hunting blind&#8221; by the wetlands just off the Beaver Pond Trail.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><li class=\"listing-item\"><div class=\"content\"><p><strong>Sherwood Island State Park<br \/>\n<\/strong>Sherwood Island State Park encompasses\u00a0235 acres in the Greens Farms section of Westport.\u00a0 \u00a0This was\u00a0Connecticut&#8217;s first state park and offers opportunities to picnic, &#8230;&#8221;swim in Long Island Sound, or view marsh life from the observation platform at Sherwood Island.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0The park has accessible bathrooms, picnic tables and shelter, lies on the west side of Route 219 in Barkhamsted, Connecticut, just over three miles northeast of the Route 44 intersection in New Hartford Center.
