Headquarters Hiking Trail is a half-mile, self-guided, foot trail.&#8221;\u00a0 Since the refuge website does not address accessibility, it would be best to call ahead to be sure trails are easy enough for you.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/li><li class=\"listing-item\"><div class=\"content\"><p><strong>Chippewa National Forest<br \/>\n<\/strong>Chippewa National Forest &#8220;contains two of Minnesota&#8217;s five largest lakes, and eight different types of wetlands each with distinct plant and animal life.&#8221; It is located near the boundaries of the coniferous forest to the north, the hardwoods to the south, and the prairie to the west, and is home to 314 species of wildlife, including timberwolves, beaver, eagles and moose.<br \/>\nPhone:\u00a0218.335.8600\u00a0 \u00a0Here is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/attmain\/chippewa\/specialplaces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forest website<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0<strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Hikerwithcane.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"icon-image alignleft wp-image-1697 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Hikerwithcane.png\" alt=\"Hikerwithcane\" width=\"18\" height=\"19\" \/><\/a><\/strong>The <a title=\"Norway Beach Interpretive trail\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/chippewa\/specialplaces\/recarea\/?recid=26728&amp;actid=50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Norway Beach Interpretive Trail<\/a> is 1.5 mile long. \u00a0Photos of it look as though it would be easy, but I am not finding much information about it. \u00a0Call\u00a0218.335.8600 to learn more and to be sure it is open.\u00a0 &#8220;Access to the beach is first a paved path and then open, level \u00a0grassy picnic area.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/wheelchair_symbol_blue.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"icon-image alignleft wp-image-1212 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/wheelchair_symbol_blue.png\" alt=\"Wheelchair Accessible\" width=\"18\" height=\"19\" \/><\/a>The <a title=\"Heartland State Trail\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/chippewa\/recreation\/hiking\/recarea\/?recid=26826&amp;actid=50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heartland State Trail<\/a> &#8220;is a 47 mile paved multiple use trail between Park Rapids and Cass Lake.\u00a0 The trail is located entirely on a level abandoned railroad grade, except for a four mile segment north of Walker which is on sharply rolling terrain. &#8221; \u00a0From <a title=\"TrailLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.traillink.com\/trail\/heartland-state-trail.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TrailLink<\/a>:\u00a0\u00a0it &#8220;&#8230;runs past a number of lakes, rivers and streams, many of which are directly accessible from the pathway. &#8230;..\u00a0towering white pine, spruce fir and hardwood forests offer shade and habitat for various animals, including raccoon, red fox, whitetail deer, beaver and porcupine. The trail also skirts the edge of both Paul Bunyan State Forest and Chippewa National Forest, home to a large population of bald eagles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><li class=\"listing-item\"><div class=\"content\"><p><strong>Pipestone National Monument<br \/>\n<\/strong>&#8220;For countless generations, American Indians have quarried the red pipestone found at this site. These grounds are sacred to many people because the pipestone quarried here is carved into pipes used for prayer. Many believe that the pipe&#8217;s smoke carries one&#8217;s prayer to the Great Spirit. It was established in 1935 to preserve valuable habitat for waterfowl. Some muddy and wet areas may be encountered.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><li class=\"listing-item\"><div class=\"content\"><p><strong>Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge<\/strong><br \/>\nSherburne National Wildlife Refuge in east central Minnesota is managed to promote the health and well-being of migratory birds and their habitat. There are\u00a0upland habitats are dynamic, ranging from grasslands to oak savanna to forest, interspersed with a variety of wetland and river habitats ranging from sedge meadow to deep water marsh.\u00a0 &#8220;In October, thousands of sandhill cranes converge on the refuge marshes and a visit at dawn or dusk will provide the rare treat of large flocks of birds flying in or out of the refuge. &#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a title=\"Sherburne NWR Map and Regulations\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fws.gov\/uploadedFiles\/Refuge_Map_and_Regulations_2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Map<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0Call\u00a01-877-721-4295 or 763-389-3323\u00a0 for information.\u00a0 Here is their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/refuge\/Sherburne\/visit\/plan_your_visit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/uploadedFiles\/RefugeMap(2).pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brochure<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Hikerwithcane.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1697\" src=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Hikerwithcane.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"18\" height=\"19\" \/><\/a>Two scenic hiking trails, the Blue Hill and the Mahnomen, provide a total of &#8220;nearly eight miles of easy walking. &#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/wheelchair_symbol_blue.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1212\" src=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/wheelchair_symbol_blue.png\" alt=\"Wheelchair Accessible\" width=\"18\" height=\"19\" \/><\/a>The Prairie\u2019s Edge Wildlife Drive, a 7.3-mile loop road, &#8220;provides vehicle access for wildlife viewing in wetlands, oak savanna, prairie openings, and woodlands. The drive is open from late April through October, or as weather dictates.&#8221;\u00a0 The map shows a wheelchair accessibility icon next to this road.\u00a0 Better check with the Refuge first.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/li><li class=\"listing-item\"><div class=\"content\"><p><strong>Superior National Forest<br \/>\n<\/strong>Superior National Forest in northeastern Minnesota bordering on Canada &#8220;&#8230;is known for its boreal forest ecosystem, numerous clean lakes, and a colorful cultural history. The one million-acre\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/detail\/superior\/specialplaces\/?cid=fseprd555184\">Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness<\/a>\u00a0lies within the boundaries of the Forest.&#8221;<br \/>\nHere is a\u00a0<a title=\"Hiking Gunflint Toft\" href=\"http:\/\/www.visitcookcounty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/CookCountyHikingMap.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hiking Brochure<\/a>\u00a0for the\u00a0Forest. \u00a0Accessibility is not mentioned, although there are some short interpretive trails which might be easy, at least.\u00a0 There are quite a few easy trails listed for the Tofte and Gunflint Ranger Districts in this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/Internet\/FSE_DOCUMENTS\/stelprdb5196313.pdf\">East Zone Hiking<\/a>\u00a0brochure.<br \/>\nHere is the Forest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/main\/superior\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0 Phone: 218-626-4300<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/wheelchair_symbol_blue.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"icon-image alignleft wp-image-1212 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/wheelchair_symbol_blue.png\" alt=\"Wheelchair Accessible\" width=\"18\" height=\"19\" \/><\/a><a title=\"Vermillion Falls\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/superior\/recreation\/hiking\/recarea\/?recid=41624&amp;actid=50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vermilion Falls<\/a> is about 27 miles northeast of Orr. \u00a0 The trail is 0.25 miles round trip. \u00a0&#8220;The trail and the observation deck overlooking the falls are accessible.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Hikerwithcane.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"icon-image alignleft wp-image-1697 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Hikerwithcane.png\" alt=\"Hikerwithcane\" width=\"18\" height=\"19\" \/><\/a>The 1000&#8242;\u00a0<a title=\"White Pine Trail\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/superior\/recreation\/hiking\/recarea\/?recid=77755&amp;actid=50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">White Pine Trail<\/a> sounds as if it might be wheelchair accessible, but the Forest Service only says\u00a0it\u00a0is &#8220;wide and graveled&#8221;. \u00a0 It goes through &#8220;majestic&#8221; white pines.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Hikerwithcane.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"icon-image alignleft wp-image-1697 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Hikerwithcane.png\" alt=\"Hikerwithcane\" width=\"18\" height=\"19\" \/><\/a>The North <a title=\"North Dark River Trail\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/recarea\/superior\/recreation\/hiking\/recarea\/?recid=77732&amp;actid=50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dark River Trail \u00a0<\/a>\u00a0goes\u00a0along the east bank of the Dark river through a pine plantation as is described as &#8220;generally flat.&#8221; \u00a0<a title=\"ironrange.org\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ironrange.org\/things-to-do\/north-dark-river-trail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ironrange.org<\/a> describes it as &#8220;usable and accessible by people of all ages.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/wheelchair_symbol_blue.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1212\" src=\"http:\/\/www.accessiblenature.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/wheelchair_symbol_blue.png\" alt=\"Wheelchair Accessible\" width=\"18\" height=\"19\" \/><\/a>There are 3 handicapped accessible trails in Grand Portage State Park which is within the Forest.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/li><li class=\"listing-item\"><div class=\"content\"><p><strong>Voyageurs National Park<br \/>\n<\/strong>Voyageurs is &#8220;&#8230;218,054 acres, including 84,000 acres of water, many miles of undeveloped shoreline and hundreds of islands. The park\u2019s 55-mile northern boundary is the international border between the United States and Canada&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;This area, where the southern boreal forest meets and mixes with the northern hardwood forest, is widely\u00a0known for its wildlife viewing opportunities.&#8221;\u00a0 You might hear wolves or see bald eagles, loons, moose, and otters.<br \/>\nPhone\u00a0218-283-6600.
